Should your skincare routine change for spring?

Most of us will need to slightly alter our skincare routines during the warmer months.

Why? - Because the issues that you are trying to treat or avoid in autumn/winter are not the same issues you’ll be treating as it gets hotter. Where you were once trying to layer thick creams and oils to lock in moisture, you won’t need the same level of intensity throughout spring. Instead you’ll be trying to maintain skin hydration and limit excess oil and grease sitting on top of your skin. You’ll also be more mindful about maximising skin protection.

Spring skincare routine – what you need to know

1. Cleanse and Exfoliate

Do this to keep your skin in tip top condition by removing dead skin cells and promoting new skin cell turnover, revealing a healthy glow. Cleansing is very important so that your skin doesn’t get congested with build up of sweat, makeup and SPF. Depending on what kind of exfoliators you use, they can even help to balance oil production. Our Serene Green Clay Mask is excellent at drawing out excess oils from the skin, gently exfoliating and cleansing, all while not stripping the skin and adding in hydration. Our formula includes white willow bark, a gentler alternative to salicylic acid.

Sufficient cleansing and exfoliation will help you to avoid breakouts and improve skin texture, just don’t overdo it! Cleanse in the mornings and evenings and exfoliate 2-3 times a week depending on how your skin likes it.

2. Hydrate your skin

Don’t be tempted to neglect your skin during warmer months. Healthy skin requires hydration and a note to our oily friends – oily skin is often a symptom of dehydrated skin. Stock up on face mists and look out for hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerine, polyglutamic acid and panthenol.

3. Defend your skin from free radicals with antioxidants

Antioxidants are perfect for keeping your skin protected and healthy as free radical damage deteriorates the skin, causes damage and accelerates the aging process. Antioxidants help to neutralise the effects of free radicals and boost your sun protection when used alongside the appropriate sunscreen. Our Superior Complexion Antioxidant Serum is fast-penetrating, absorbing quickly into the skin and contains vitamins A, C, E, F & K...lots of antioxidant goodness!

4. Get serious about sun protection!

This should be maintained all year round but, even more so in the spring and summer months. Be sure to adequately protect your skin with a good sunscreen, a minimum of SPF30 (SPF50 is even better). UV exposure and damage from the sun is one of the biggest, proven causes of all your worst skin nightmares – think premature aging, wrinkles, fine lines, sun spots, pigmentation and collagen decline. Don’t be shy with your sun protection, slather that stuff all over in generous layers.

General spring skincare advice

In general, the key tip for spring skincare is to go in with lighter products in lighter layers. Don’t shy away from moisturisers, just look out for light hydrating ones and the same can go for cleansers, serums and sunscreens too.
